Hats!!

C5bEb20C60750fA4__profileAs the weather waivers and is deciding where it is going to settle, I’m already getting my hats out. Not that I need a weather excuse to take them out. I have always been a fan of hats as an all-day accessory piece. I would never do a baseball cap but in my years I have experimented with many kinds of hats. In middle school I did the newsboy hat in tweed and cotton, in high school I have tried the fedora and the beanie but fell in love with the knitted beret. My mother and grandmother have both knitted me many berets in assorted colors and patterns that I wear with my hair down to add a little urban funk to my outfit. Hats are the ultimate statement pieces because people notice your head/face automatically when they see you. I understand that people use excuses to stray from hats because they claim they look bad in them but there are so many options of hats out there is bound to be a style for everyone. Even if the weather hasn’t decided what temperature it wants to be yet, you should all start to get your hats out today!

Fur is So Delightful

Posted by LITTLEbird 05, January, 2010 No Comments » everything else

bbfurcoatfurpillboxhatDuring this holiday season and throughout the rest of winter, here in Baltimore, it will be quite frigid.  Tights, coats, scarves, hats, and gloves are necessities.  What I absolutely love about this cold weather, is the fact that it is finally time for fur!  You don’t have to be attending a lavish party to wear fur.  It’s made in an array of forms, so that it is acceptable in a multitude of places.  Fur vests are great to pair with jeans or a skirt to be more dressy.  Fur pillbox hats are so comfortable and look fabulous with solid colored coats.  Short fur jackets are even more acceptable in a wider range of places than fur coats perhaps.  If you want to be a little more subtle while wearing fur, fur gloves or fur boots will definitely do the trick.  For Christmas, my mom (queen of fur) got me a pair of black fox fur ear muffs (they make fur everything).  And if you aren’t into wearing real fur, faux fur is just as nice…no one will ever know.  For myself, whether heading downtown to the Hippodrome to see a play, or walking around to numerous museums, shops, and restaurants, fur keeps me warm and always is an important piece of my outfit.  So when the weather outside is frightful, fur is oh so delightful!

Cute as a Button

littlebird-button1littlebird-button2Confession: I have been listening to Christmas music since mid-October. My favorite thing about Christmas? Getting presents (was this very hard to guess?). My least favorite thing about Christmas? Giving presents. It’s not that I’m stingy (well…) but when it comes to choosing and/or wrapping gifts for my immediate family members, I am truly awful. Horrific, even. Which is why, this year, I’m going to compensate for my pathetic taste in gifts by pairing them with the most adorable cards I’ve ever seen. They’re not technically Christmas cards, but Christmas is the only reason I’d pay to have greeting cards shipped from England. The card is an oversized button, and one side of it reads ‘You’re as cute as a button.” Who wouldn’t want to receive comparisons to their general cuteness for Christmas, Hannukah, or any occasion? These button-cards can be found on www.presentandcorrect.com

Boy, do I love Sequins

Posted by LITTLEbird 07, December, 2009 No Comments » fashion

a+oSome may say that sequins are “too flashy”, or “gaudy”, however I definitely beg to differ.  Sequins can be tasteful, and if done in moderation always are appealing.  When thinking of a sequined dress, I think, “infinitesimal shimmering lights being worn as a fashionable garment and undoubtedly eye-catching”.  This season, I am wearing sequins galore!  It is the right time (always the perfect time for me) to throw on that black sequined Alice + Olivia dress to go dance the night away.  Stores like TopShop and H&M carry an array of sequins–fit for almost any occasion.  Sequined dresses, skirts, headbands, belts, shoes, and even blazers are being made (heaven-on-earth).  I also love to look through my mom’s vintage clothing or go to a vintage shop to look for cool sequined items–you will usually find a hidden treasure.  Nevertheless, with anything, you can absolutely dress-down your choice of sequins.  You can totally be just as glam while wearing sequined flats.  Sequins are trendy, yet incredibly styling.  Wearing sequins will make you feel like a superstar, and you will beyond question look like one!

Project Runway

Kenley-s-Collection-project-runway-2453967-361-526Fashion Project Runway Fall 2009This past Thursday, Project Runway completed its 6th Season with its finale runway show in Bryant Park. Every year, I anxiously await the start of a new season of Project Runway where two of my biggest loves: reality TV and fashion combine into one beautifully crafted and entertaining compilation. I idolize these designers who can create awesome designs under immense pressure and usually start my own DIY projects by using them as my inspiration. This year I had a lot of anticipation of the new season and was quickly disappointed week to week by the challenges and the cast of characters. I usually make sure to memorize first and last names of all the designers by the second week but this time I only knew the final fives name. I usually have my favorite personalities and my favorite designers who sometimes overlap, like Jeffrey Sebelia of Season 3 or Kenley Collins of Season 5 for their upfront attitudes and quirky designs, but this season I could pick no favorites. This season, all the designers proved to be a bore culminating in a colorless runway show on Thursday. Although there was some pretty pieces including nice knitwear and cute skirts, it all proved to be a bore with nothing innovative or exciting to look forward to on the fashion front. The only thing memorable about this season will be the pregnancy challenge not only for its horrific outfits such as the egg outfitor badly made short shorts but Shirin’s gorgeous and intricate dress. They got rid of all the interesting characters early in the game like the 40’s style Louise, wacky Ari and Malvin and his androgynous clothing. I don’t know whether I’m looking forward to next season. Although, I know I’ll watch no matter what, I’m hoping for a little more innovation. Until then, all of you should head to your sewing machines and start doing your own DIY projects, maybe you could add a little umph to the next season of Project Runway.
