After being completely-underdressed-and-therefore-freezing for my walking tour of colonial NYC yesterday, I’ve decided to post about transitional dressing, a.k.a the times of year when weather.com says it’s 65 degrees outside, and you step outside and wish they had said ‘65 degrees, give or take 20′. Here are some tips for moving smoothly from season to season:

1. Layer!! This is essential because you never know whether a building will have the AC or the heat pumping. I’m almost always wearing a combo of tank, cardigan, scarf, with each piece coming and going throughout the day, pairing with the appropriate jacket and shoes. (see below)

2. Buy a trenchcoat. I resisted the lure of the trench for many years, until I made one of the best purchases ever when I bought my GAP trench with the bright yellow lining and removable gray flannel layer. I seriously wear this every day. It keeps me the right amount of warm, covers my bases if it starts to rain, and best of all, make anything you wear underneath look good. Run, don’t walk, and get a trench!

3. Throw a scarf in your purse. I have a collection of scarves for warm days, freezing days, and days in between. The right scarf (or any scarf for that matter) looks cool and does wonders for regulating body temperature.
4. Don’t throw on sandals and a mini the second it gets a bit warmer. Or, to be more clear, 70 degrees is not shorts and flip flop weather! I know you’re excited, but wait a few weeks to break out the gladiators.

5. During these iffy months check the temp before you leave the house. It probably won’t be accurate but at least you’ll have some idea…
6. Tote in your tote a headband for humid days when it starts to pour and your ‘do gets ruined, and some sweet shades for when the sun peeks through.
(To be continued, when I think of more tips…)
